How long did it take you?

Since I only dish out maybe 4 beats a month...It took me a while to grow as a beatmaker... Arranging/mixing are definitely taking a big chunk of my time... I would say 3 1/2 years.....but I still have a long way to go...

    Pro tools and hip hop

Fist of all, stay away from cheap thin sounding synths/vst intruments and get yourself some solid tools like NI,Trilogy, G-media, etc plug-ins... Drums sound are more crucial to your signature sound than anything else..so I would spend most of my time searching/tweaking drum kits to get a...

    compressor

I dont own a outboard compressor but I keep hearing about how API comps are very good for drums and everything else... model 225L - 525- 2500 ( www.apiaudio.com ) but quite expensive.. The old "DBX 160" would be the cheap alternative for fat drums...apparently used by big time producers...

    VA hey hey hey

Welcome John, Im sure you will find loads of info around this forum...but dont get caught up in the gear obsession too early in the game..it gets expensive..lol Peace

    monitor speakers

I have the KRK Rp5 and rp10 sub combo....They sound great but I would definitely go for a 8 inch version, because of the fact that there is no calibration needed. If your room is already treated and well balanced, go for the sub... By the way the RP10 plays extremely loud, I have it barely...

Just ordered a conga and bongo set for no reason

Good move Ash Holmz, Thats a good investment...I assume you already have a decent mic and pre amp for recording... I would buy some live percussion too but I dont own a mic and my acoustics are horrible. Post some audio clips when your done bashing on those congas...:)))

It's so cold in the D!

That CRACKED me up for for sure, no pun intended... The beat is not that bad...but the voice should of been buried in that cemetery...

    Add bass to tracks

I get some nice bass tones with Trilogy's electric bass presets... But I guess theres nothing that comes close to the sound of a good bass played by a funky player going in high end gear and mixed by Dave Pensado!!!

has this ever happen to you?

Never happened to me yet but.....that would definitely suck... When I hear those obvious recognizable samples from songs like Georgia, it make my teeth grind... I think that some songs should be left alone OR creatively choped to make something else... But some Producers just dont give...

    The Game - LAX

I didn't ear any of the songs yet...but I hope there's going to be some Nottz production in there.... Loved the "One Night" joint on the last album...

What gear changed your production style or sound?

I have to say FL studio too.... That software just opened up my interest in production...I didn't even know how to use the FX section properly....but it didnt matter really, the sequencer was easy to use and it was actually fun to program a loop.... Is it just me or the "midi timing" feels...

Can I sample from Turntables without a Phono Preamp?

Well it's not that I had issues with it ,its more like it didn't made sense to keep that device in my signal chain because it didn't bring any gain or definition in my sample recordings.... BTW I had a Cambride Audio540P..

Is XXX good for Hip Hop sounds?

Im sure it would be nice on drums... I heard that mixing down to a S-VHS tape can give a certain saturation.......but not as nice as a 1/2 " tape...cause of the limited bandwith used stricly for audio on the s-vhs tape. Have you had any good experiences with Umatic or s-vhs....

    80's Style Hip Hop Beats...

Hey Bucky Ruckus, Its funny your looking for that 80's sound.... I started to make a beat for the "Public Enemy Remix Contest" but realized a few days later that Quebec was not eligible for the contest...injustice to its finesse. anyhow...Ill hit you up with a mp3 when Im done... Peace

    Good VST plugin

"Oddity" is one of my new favorite toy that is based on the ARP Odyssey synthesiser from the 70's... It definitely has caracter and a certain color to it....Kinda noisy but in a good analog way.. http://www.gmediamusic.com/gforce/oddity/oddity.html

Can I sample from Turntables without a Phono Preamp?

I would go with the mixer too,....I did the mistake of buying a dedicated nice consumer level phono preamp thinking it would boost my signal...but it didnt.. The connections were unbalanced and not suitable for my rig.....what a waste.. My vestax mixer does the job...but I wouldn't mind...
