Any advice?

Earlier this summer, I was at a pretty dope home recording studio with a friend of mine who somehow knew the owner of the studio, and was getting help with a beat from him. I was there for less than an hour, but I had the chance to show the producer one of my tracks, as he was busy and had other things to do. The producer liked the track and told me and my friend to call him and show him what we wanted to do. I never really made an effort to call this producer because I didn't really see what I needed him for. I wasn't really interested in buying studio time to record an album with my friend or anything. Also, I think this guy mostly produces R&B type tracks... something I'm not really into.
There was another dude who was at the studio who heard my beat. He then introduced himself, gave me his card and told me to call him. He's a local hiphop promoter who has a weekly radio show on the college radio station (Binghamton University). He also makes compilation CDs of local MC's that are distributed in local record shops and such. I called him once or twice, but circumstances made it impossible for us to meet. I recently ran into him while I was on my break at work (cook at denny's lol...) and he told me that we could meet up sometime this week.
I've heard some of his compilation albums with local MC's and his radio show, and they are pretty dope for the most part. He did a phone interview with Masta Ace last night I guess. This guy lives hiphop... I think this working with this guy is definitely a good step for me to start getting some recognition. He seems well connected with local MC's at least, some of which are pretty dope...

Well, anyways... I got this meeting coming up... I plan on burning a CD full of my beats and either taking him for a ride in my car and listening to them, or going to his house and listening to them. I'm thinkin about also bringing a blunt to help enhance our music appreciation. I know it will make me feel the music more, but to get high with someone who is pretty much a complete stranger may turn into an awkward situation... I also tend to get pretty retarded when I smoke...

Should I master the beats first? Right now my beats are made/mastered on a really shitty PC subwoofer/sattelite system. It would be difficult, but possible to access better equipment to master some beats on, but may cost money or delay my meeting with this dude. It would be shitty if I turn on my beats and they sound like shit, because they were not mastered properly...

I really do not know what to expect as far as what he will want to do if he likes them. Ideally I would like to use this guy to develop a relationship with the dope MCs in the area and start selling beats to them... my reputation/connections will grow... slowly but surely...

Anyone have any advice for this meeting? I really think there is some serious potential here...

Hey Dude,

Ive not been in this position but all I can say to help is get some good Sennheiser headphones and just master them as good as you can. Then go out of the room and listen (through speakers) from around a corner and see if anything sounds predominent to everything else, i.e. if the share or clap just sounds too loud or of somthing sounds too quiet etc... I know it sounds wierd but I think it helps! Also, I think its good to listen to the CD your going to take on as many different sound systems as possible, go to a Hi-Fi store if need be and make out your gonna buy one if necessary!!!!

I know what your saying about the blunt... sometime I think having a blunt with someone you dont really know may be a bit strange but just dont worry about it if thats what you wanna do. There could be quiet times but be yourself dude! Have a few things prepared to say about each tune just incase as there probably 3 minutes long each right.

dont pay to get the trax mastered man .. ur wasting your money .. if they are dope he will feel them.. and dont come high to the meeting .. try to conduct urself as a professional ...if you two build then decide to smoke....then its whatever.. but i would not bring the issue of weed up ... let him do it if its gonna happen

Benny: You got tha same shitty monitoring setup as me, so i suggest this since ive been in tha same situation once or twice:

Mix tha shit down tha best u can and then burn tha bitch.
Play that shit in yer house, yer headphones, tha car, yer girlfriends car, and whereever else u can - and every time you play it - analyze that shit and decide what needs to be improved, levels brought up/down, etc....
When u think of what should be altered, dont jus make a mental note, instead write that shit down real quick on a piece of notebook paper or somethin and keep addin to that till you feel yer content.
And Burn as many cd's as it takes till you get to tha level of quality your tryin to achieve.
I also suggest not being afraid of having several different mixes and then choosing tha best one at tha end....theres nothing wrong with that.
