Im looking into getting logic 7 and ha few questions regarding the program.

1.Can you load your own sounds & use them in ultrabeat?

2.Whats the quality of ultrabeat compared to an mpc sound?

yeah ultrabeat is a sampler as well as sound generator.

everything has a different sound. no, ultrabeat can't sound exactly the same as your mpc, but if you put the same samples in, i dont even know if anyone could tell period. bottom line is if you have good drum sounds to use, yes, ultrabeat can make good drums...its not like its gonna destroy your sounds, you know?

organ is very good, but dont pay 1,000 for an organ alone...b4 by NI will do that for far less. keyboard sounds, you mean piano sounds? it has yamaha grands and all the standards but i still find myself going to reason pianos or ivory for better sounds.

logic is sick, but the biggest thing i tell people about the program is don't get it if you think it is like anything else out there. it is not like Fl or cubase where you're getting deep within a few weeks or something...the manual is 1500 pages, and after that most people still read supplementary books. this program takes a very, very large amount of effort to learn and learn well, to the poitn where you're actually getting the advantages it gives you over sonar or cubase.

by the way rumor has it logic 8 is coming soon, this version has been out for a real long time so i would personally say its a bad time to buy, but then again 8 may not come til august or later, nobody really knows, so its your call.

Yeah I heard about logic pro coming out but ill go ahead and get 7 and upgrade when 8 comes.I've already ordered a few training dvd's for logic i have to learn by seeing and doing, reading just wont do it.

My only concern its the learning curve it was the quality of logic.I've heard alot of good things about it.From people saying it has quantize & swing settings like the mpc and its easy to customize how you wanna work.

I plan on using the yamaha motif xs6 i just pre-ordered with it and my vst plug-ins:
Miroslav Philharmonik
Battery 3
Motu Ethno
Minimoog V
Minimonsta
Trilogy
Acoustic legends

and I got a gain of sample cd's to use with the sampler in logic. But i know in combination with logic's plug-ins,my motif & vst plug-ins im good on sounds.

If you got any tips you can past on to a begineer please do.Im eager to learn this program

Thanks for the response Hi-Lo!

glad to hear you're coming over to the logic side of things man there simply is no compositonal tool out there like it. only thing i would warn you is that tutorial dvds wont do it...dont get me wrong the ask dvds and a lot of the others are good and will get you working in the program, but this is what im trying to explain...logic is deeper than a 10 dvd set, you know? learning every function of the synths such as sculpture and ultrabeat can take a lot of reading so be prepared for that.

a few big things; memorize and customize the key commands. apple's manual emphasises them for good reason, they really make logic uniquely powerful and tailored to your workflow. don't feel like you gotta keep any of the presets- its your studio, make it do what works for you.

get very familiar with the environment, it is the heart of logic. when you first start reading or watching even a good tutorial about it you really wont fully be able to get your head around what it can do, but spend some time with it, and you will be amazed.

use screensets 1-9 all the time. if you're only using 1 or 2 screensets your workflow is gonna be a lot slower than what it could be. make sure you realize the screensets are fully defineable; everything you put in a screenset will look exactly the same the next time you come back to it down to zoom level and focus and things like that.

make sure you learn cycle mode real early, its essential for hip hop composition...the "/" button on your keyboard switches it on.

oh and finally make sure your computer is up to task...new processor, big screen, lots of ram, fast hard drive (i can't emphasize that one enough- logic will choke on a 5400rpm drive), and don't run apps in the background at all when producing. if you really want to get the best performance out of logic do a restart before opening to clear your ram, set your desktop temporarily to a plain color built in with osx, and keep all other apps closed while you're running the program, cause it really is that power hungry. make sure you got AU versions of your plugins because logic doesn't take vst.

Yeah I just want to use the dvd's to get me up and running I know I have alot of reading to do and I'll learn things as I go along.Ive already been reading the manual

Question.Should I get a mac book pro laptop or mac pro desktop to run logic.I was thinking about the mac book pro laptop because it has 17" widescreen,2.33ghz intel core 2 duo processor,3gb of ram and a 200gb hard drive.

Let me know what you think

both are very capable machines, i have a first gen mac book pro. without a doubt the mac pro is more powerful, but portability is the evening out factor for the mac book...it is very nice to be able to take my entire studio with me to a session or wherever else its needed. the mac pro is a beast though and the expansion options are crazy

like i said that mac book pro you have configured sounds sick...already about 60% faster than mine which i got 5 months ago, gotta love apple...but make absolutely sure that 200 gig drive is 7200 rpm, which I dont think it is. the advice im about to give you really isnt optional if you want logic to run well; you gotta have a 7200 internal as well as firewire 400/800 externals (NOT usb 2.0). i wouldnt worry about internal drive size much since the most efficient way to run logic is to install AU applications+logic on the main HD, and install all of their samples (including logic's instrument samples) on a FW 800 external.

Yea i got a RME fireface 400 interface its the truth(it has really good converters and midi clock) and I have a western digital 500gb HD/7200 rpm.

Im going to still use my mpc 1000 for my drums & samples and sync it to logic(killer combo)

I found out about the autosampler from redmatica.com.You sample any hardware or virtual instruments and turn those patches EXS-24 format sounds.so instead of buying the motif Im going to sample that plus alot of other modules. There is a company in atlanta I can rent the keyboards and modules from for cheap, sample the sounds and take them back.My sound library for the EXS-24 is going to be off the hook.

Keyboards/Sound Modules To be Sampled:

E-mu Proteus 2000
E-mu Mo Phatt
Korg Trition Extreme
Korg MS-2000R
Nord Lead 2
Novation Supernova
Roland Fantom X6
Roland V-synth XT
Roland XV-5080
Roland XV-5080 sound cards
Roland JP-8000
Roland MKS-20
Studio Electronics SE-1
Yamaha ES rack

yup, i have an autosampled motif built in and the fireface is a fantastic piece of equipment. if ya wouldn't mind man, i would love to get my hands on some of those sounds once you do that...i'll throw you some cash or just help with logic, whatever. let me know on that one. as far as software goes you're talking to someone with damn near every elite vst around, i can get just about anything for you.
