So, I've finally started back mixing this mixtape for this dude. Got some songs mixed, sent them to him for approval and he doesn't like the mixes. His complaint, he sounds too much like himself. He doesn't like his voice, so he wants me to "add some more effects to it." Wants me to drown his voice in reverb. Not because it'll fit the feel of the song better, but simply because he doesn't like his voice.

I told him that I'm just going to give him that DMC/Greg Nice echo on all the tracks.

If he doesnt like the sound of his own voice why is he even an artist?

Some artists have a tendency to want to drown their vocals in effects, especially reverb or delay.
But they dont realise the importance of less is more or context.
Just a couple years ago it would have been more fucking autotune.

I have had to have times when the artist is reviewing the song in the studio and they keep asking for more effects, when they leave I just reset all the effects back to where they should have been in the first place.

Same question I asked.

I too have done the old add and remove trick. I've also recorded final takes while the artist was "practicing his verse" because it sounded much more "comfortable" than when they knew they were being recorded.

I would start with the question...What is it that you don't like about your voice? and go from there... I'm not sure that effects is the answer.
