what exactly does a midi controler do?

I have reason 2.5 and a midi keyboard - but its like a kids starter keyboard, more of a toy than anything. I dont have an external soundcard so I route it through my "hercules DJ console mixer" which is a heap of shit toy aswell for aspiring laptop djs (but the sound is shit)

any particular models come recomended and do I need an external soundcard?

what actual effect will this have on my music? what does it actually do?

any knob in/on your software can be assigned to a knob ( the midi controller ).

thats it? I mean dont get me wrong, shit is groovy and tweakin with a mouse is time consuming, but the results are the same right?

the results are better, im a tweak freak and tweaking one knob at a time is a real disability for a bit of intuitive producing
