Meet Rob Deez, an up and coming LA-based up artist who's into malt liquor,comedy and everything in between. He's recently released an album entitled "Bi-Polar". I caught up with him, asked about the LP, his upbringing, his favorite 40, etc ...Now time for the interview.
Wattup Rob Deez?
Man, I'm trying to be Excellent like you! I'm going a hundred miles an hour with the brakes on.
Could you please briefly introduce yourself?
The name is Rob Deez, but you can call me whatever you want to call me just as long as you call me! Can ya dig it. I'm an Emcee/Producer/Singer Songwriter/Poet/Musician and a couple other things but basically just another lover of music that has chosen to express himself within the artform.
When did you start making music?
Well that matters on what type of music where talking about? The first thing I can remember about my childhood is my father sitting me in front of the piano and telling me we were going to learn how to play the instrument. So I've been around music my whole life, I didn't get into hip-hop until about the summer of ninety eight. And it's actually funny cause I was trying to be a DJ, HAHAHA I was introduced to a owner of a record label in my home town Davenport, Iowa and he wanted to put two of my close friends who were rappers together with myself and make a new school Run DMC type of group. And as we were going through the whole process the fellaz told me I should start rapping on some of the songs, so I wrote a couple of verses and the rest is history.
How would you describe your style?
Now that's a difficult one, because I try to be versatile as artist when it comes to my style. I like to let the beat guide my direction when it comes to how I spit on a track. To be honest with you I really don't think I have a style like anyone else's that I could use as a description. However, I do know I have memorable style HAHAHA if that makes any sense. For general terms I would probably say I have a conversational style of writing, with a very charismatic delivery, and a comedic perception.
Who are your main influences?
Man I listen to everything, if you make something hot! I'm going to study it and try to figure out why people like it. I personally enjoy artist that I feel are true to their self's you know they don't sugar coat anything. I would say my main influences would be Andre 3000, Cee-lo, Missy & Timbaland from back in the day, Prince, and Erykah Badu.
You have recently released an album entitled "Bi-Polar", what is the main concept behind it?
Bi-Polar originally is a mental disorder where individuals experiences extreme highs and
lows at very drastically increments. When I was originally creating this album I felt as if I was split as an artist not in the high and low sense but in a braggadocio's versus conscience sense. So basically I was going through a phase in my life where I was use to writing songs that were very braggadocios like most hip-hop "I am this Ish!!!!! and can't nobody stop me!" Now for whatever reason as humans you have your day to day things you need to do to maintain your lifestyle and as I was getting older my lifestyle was changing. I had to work a nine to five, I gotta pay bills, I have to be responsible, and I'm falling in love with this woman. So because my life was changing, my rhymes were changing and I started to feel more conscience about what I said. So the Bi-Polar Concept is the struggle I went through to create this album and the fight I had within myself Between the braggadocios Rob Deez & the truthful artist of oneself. Now the beauty of the project is all of this happens within a love story. It's not easy to catch but if you listen from start to finish you'll see I as an artist fall in love then fall out to finally find the truth in life. Most of the
braggadocios songs are on the front half of the album and the conscience are at the end of the album.
One thing I've noticed is that there's a lot of comedic themes on it. Ever thought of trying stand up comedy and the likes?
You know I've been told by friends and family that I should get into comedy but never reallypursued it. I think if I actually put my mind to it I could probably make it happen but I don't wakeup in the middle of the night and write down jokes. HAHA I wake up in themiddle of the night and make beatz or write hooks and lyrics, ya feel me.
Apparently you're a big fan of malt liquor, what's your favorite 40?
HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY!!!!!!!!! Now you talking my language I would
have to go with that good old Mickey's. But its changed overtime, at first it was that Old E (Old English 800), Then I bounced to that Magnum, what you know about that Magnum!!!! Ohhh can't forget the King Cobra she always put me in a good mood. I use to rock that "Schlit'z Malt Liquor". And I think everyone got down with that Billy D Colt 45. Man you got me so excited I had to go to the fridge and grab a Hefeweizen!! LOL.
With whom would you like to collaborate in the future?
Anybody that's in love with music like I am! I think the more people you collaborate with
the more you learn because everyone does things just a little different. I've learned things from all kinds of different artist and will continue to do so until I stop.
