ILLIEN
Battle Points: 1
It seems to be a common opinion that taking 4 bars from a record as they are, looping them, adding drums and other samples and instruments on top is something that producers should avoid. To win a battle on Illmuzic? Okay, fair enough. Should they never do it? Well, hold on a moment. I could give a billion examples; let’s take this one, and forgive me if it’s not hip hop, but it still applies to my reasoning. Bonobo sampled 4 bars from 'Aquarius' by Chaquito for his track 'Flutter,' and that’s exactly what we’re talking about. He built a whole song on that loop. Drums and other instruments were added, but the loop is central, not just accessory. If Bonobo had thought he shouldn’t do it, we would never have had this wonderful track. No one stopped Bonobo from producing tracks by giving up this approach, but if he had refused on principle, this music would have lost out. So I think a producer should prioritize music over technical issues. Virtuosity and skills are great when they serve the music, but it’s always the music that must lead, and music is not a tool for the ego of the creator. Good musicians, those who play real instruments, are not the ones who can play scales at monstrous speeds and impossible chords, if they don’t know when it’s time for simplicity and linearity or even to not play at all, without falling into the Malmsteen syndrome. My two cents.
