triggering apple loop slices?

Is there any way of importing/converting apple loops into the EXS24 so individual slices can be played in the same way as a REX file?

Or do I have to use recycle to slice loops up and then import into the sampler? This would seem strange if that's the only way of doing it, as it seems recycle and apple loops utility effectively do the same thing?!

Any help appreciated.

it depends...

How you place your samples in the EXS24 depends heavily on the format that they are in before you place them. It's pretty inaccurate to say that Apple Loops Utility and ReCycle do the same thing, because they are VERY different concepts and have very different purposes.

ReCycle will create a new type of file, unique to itself and supported DAWs, that is already sliced. The REX2, as I'm sure you know.

Apple Loops Utility takes the original file and adds embedded metadata that applications like Logic can read and use to help with simple functions of the program (i.e. tempo information, genres for browsing, etc...) but there is no chopping or separating of the elements of the loops natively.

There are essentially two ways to accomplish what you want. The first would be what you said; Take the loops into ReCycle, chop them yourself and then use EXS24's "Recycle Convert" to instantly turn them to an instrument.

The other way will only be possible if you are using Logic 9. You just right-click the Apple Loops you want to use, and choose "Convert to Sampler Instrument". This will automatically chop the loop based on transients and audio peaks. You have a few options for how you would like Logic to chop the loop, but it's generally less accurate than using ReCycle and doing it manually.

Should work for previous logic versions aswell, drag the apple loop into the arrangement's audio track, use scissor tool and chop away, select and drag chops into EXS edit screen.

For logic 9, drag apple loop into the arrangement's audio track.
Double click it to open audio editor.
From audio editor menu go audio-> detect transiencts, when thats done go audio-> update file.
Select the audio track in the arrangement again.
Hit the flex tool button and select slice (in the pulldown menu once that appears in flex mode) in the audio track properties.
Ctrl click the audio selection and hit slice at transcients.
Go to audio menu in the arrangement and hit convert to sampler track.

Also, you can set the sensitivity for transient detection in the audio editor by using the +/- buttons there, use ctrl click to remove transcients.

Dont forget to update when you edit the transcients in the audio editor.

instead of using the scissor tool, you can also make sure that the track is selected, play the track, and use the \"\\\" key to chop the loop in real-time.

This is the very reason why Logic 9 for me is no more than a sound module. Too many freakin steps to do one simple thing. For Logic 10 they need to bite the WHOLE concept from Ableton Live instead of some of it.
Ableton, drag sample into clip view, right click and chose how u want to slice it i.e Transient, Bar, Warp marker, click ok DONE! Slice are automatically loaded into a drum rack instrument and you can start playing away.

^^^ Logic is not aimed at post production pur sang(it will never be like Live, so i doubt that LP10 will be a Live rip off). Basicaly FL does it quicker than Live lol but that's besides the point since the TS subjected this thread to Apple Loops in Logic/exs24.

@finn; Ill try that though i think i'd still prefer use transcients marker detection since its more precise and seems just as quick, if not faster.

Off topic; Im hooked on the Vario speed emulator, sounds rediculously well even on high % and you can even pitch it to frequency. Perfect upspeed a track based on downtempo samples/phrases, even more rediculous after recording a whole band.

where would a person find such a thing?
Is it part of a certain DAW?

Its a new LP9 feature that emulates variospeed as found on tape multitrackers, ctrl click the transport in logic and enable vario speed for it to appear in the transport bar. Once enabled you can set it your liking, %, hz, etc.

Sounds like a really good tool, the beatmapping in acid 6 doesnt sound very good at high or low percentages.
I might have to check it out. Getting the right key for upscaled tempos is a really valuable tool IMO.

^^^ second best feature in LP right now, its good for hiphop beats but priceless for bands (creating odd harmonics etc). Before i was left to stretchin in the arrangement but this is a whole different engine which sounds at least 10x better than any stretch engine i have heard yet. Its a 2 track option though, you cant use it on the channels, but ive recorded some vynil into logic and bounced them using variospeed to my liking and started slicing that bounce instead of variospeed the whole track when im done with post-pro (but eitherway works well).

I think you mean mainstage 2 vs Live btw, who cares about mainstage lol
