VST stands for Virtual Studio Technology
VSTi Stands for Virtual Studio Technology Instrument

It is a format developed by Steingberg (makers of Cubase) often taking the shape of effect unit, and synths, or drum machines. a VST needs a 'host' to run in.... The host is whatever software sequencer you're using. (Acid, fruity, cubase, logic, etc...) .. so they can't be run alone (except a few with specially written code)

It is why software sequencers are so useful, and can compete with hardware. Because almost any effect of hardware instruments can be modeled, or emulated with a software equivalent. (although hardware will most always sound better) Like if you need a distortion effect, you can just download a free VST instead of buying a hardware distortion pedal. . There are also VST versions of a lot of old classic hardware synths. (Nova bassstation, Hammond B52 organ, etc...) The hardware versions cost HUGE amounts of money, but the software is relatively cheap

VST is only 1 standard. But it is the most popular. MAc now use 'Audio Units' which do the same thing, but with different code, and DirectX plug-ins do the same, but run with different code. Direct X plug-ins are most often effect units... I can't think of any that are instruments or synths. Most everything will use a direct X plug-in, but not everything will use a VST plug-in ... (Sound Forge 6 will support DX, but not VST) .. to get around this, there are what's known as VSt wrappers... they are directX plugs--- that take the code from the VST and 'wrap' it into a format that is supported. So you can use some VST intruments in that particular host ...(Older versions of fruityloops used to have to do this)

VST is open source, so you can get a SDK kit to code your own if you'd like.... Because of this, there are TONS of them out on the net... and great place to find free (and not so free) VSTs is www.kvr-vst.com ... if you want to try making your own VSTs but dont' have any coding skills... you can check out www.synthedit.com .. it's a graphic interface that lets you create your own effects, and synths. Great for learning how everything works together, and can export as a VST instrument.
