Eqing a sample to bring out the bass

I do this a lot and it works great. Don't overdo it though because muddy bass sounds worse than no bass.

    Commercialization of The Hip-Hop Persona

I agree with Ash on this one. I'm tired of this argument of underground cats hating on mainstream artists. When did 50 Cent ever claim to be Hip-Hop? I think he classifies himself as a rapper and that's that. Also its just an opinion that Street's Disciple is better than Get Rich or Die...

    Any tips on overcomposing??

Also remember that simple = catchy for the most part, any mtv or bet top 10 song is more than likely going on a basic beat. You have to leave room for the artist to work with if you want that club vibe.

    Reason Rack

Making your own rack is the funnest part about reason, my main custom has 2 redrums set up with each individual sound linked to its own combinator for eq, compression and effects. It makes it so much quicker to tweak sounds perfectly now.

Some very relevant points on sampling in Hip-Hop

Great read Kno is easily my favorite sample based producer, he truly has an amazing ear for putting sounds together. I hate people who are overly proud they can play guitar and think that it takes more talent to have someone teach you how to pluck strings than it does to match up and arrange...

Reason - How the hell do you do it??

Watching videos is a huge help. I've been using Reason for a year now and have gotten very good at it but I'm still discovering new techniques and the rack setup and wiring along with combinators are so intuitive you can get really creative with them.

    Recording to Tape? Getting Grimy.

Damn I didn't realize how expensive it was, thanks for the help. And yea I have to admit I've been listening to hip hop for a while and I'm very familiar with the classics but my production knowledge is mostly centered around contemporary methods. I was listening to some Kno beats on a...

    Recording to Tape? Getting Grimy.

I've heard a lot about people "recording to tape" to get a warm grimy sound and I was wondering how exactly do you do this. Most recently I heard about it in the article Wings just posted but I've seen it talked about many times. What is the easiest way to do this?

    Any tips on overcomposing??

If you aren't great at mastering it will be hard to have a lot of instruments at once unless you get lucky and their frequencies already fall in place. There are no rules to music, if it sounds good it sounds good but if you are trying to mimic a particular style I would just suggest comparing...

Cubase SX 3 with Reason = Game Over lol

To those of you who only use reason for drums and cubase for everything else you should seriously check out Battery 3 which was just recently released. Battery 2 was my favorite vst drum machine and now that 3 is out it COMPLETELY beats out every other drum machine. Built in effects, wav...

What am I Doing wrong w/ Reverb

To those of you who export tracks individually, I use Cubase and Reason and I was wondering if there is a really quick way to bounce reason midi tracks to audio in cubase without solo, save as, open in cubase for every single track?

    Panning instrument to both sides

Well you can record panning to the sequencer but I don't like to do it that way. If you want to try it make a new sequencer track and link it to your mixer and hit record. Moving the pan knob will record itself to the track which you can also pencil in using the sequencer zoomed in.

    Double (?) Kicks

I have no idea how you can't understand how they did that? Just tap the kick on your keys like that in the song, if you quantize you will have to either do that part unquantized or something like 1/32 or 1/64. I guess maybe you program your drums instead of playing them which is pretty lame...
