FROM LIKE 89-96, THERE WERE LIKE SOOOO MANY GEMS BEING DROPPED. MIDNIGHT MAURADERS, STUNTS BLUNTS AND HIPHOP, LORD FINESSE'S FIRST LP. MAN, JUST TOO MANY JOINTS TO NAME. CATS WAS REALLY DOING IT BACK THEN. PREMIER WAS ON TOP, CATS WAS LOOPING HORNS , TRYING TO BE THE NEXT PETE ROCK!!!! STRETCH ARMSTRONG AND BOBBITO HELD DOWN THE UNDERGROUND. CATS WAS STILL THUGGIN, BUT IN A MORE SKILLFULL AND WITTIER MANNER. GOOD EXAMPLE, MOBB DEEP. 90S HIPHOP IS WAY MORE TOLERABLE THAN ALOT OF THE STUFF U HERE NOW.

I know! It's amazing the quality of music that came out during those years. So many classic material like Infamous, Only built for Cuban Linx, Daily Operation.... I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that it's SO easy to make music today, so the quality has diminished greatly. Too many BOOM BOOM BLIP BEEP beats today. What do you think the reason is?

You're absolutly right... creativity was the key back then
To me that period was the real "golden age" of rap.... no disrespect to the pioneers but the 90's sound was just awesome.
Right now rap is like a cast system , you have the backpackers, the deep south flossers , the post-gangsta rappers, the old skool heads, the rap-rock groups, the muslim cats , so on and so on
back then nobody cared about that : no matter where you came from ,if you had tight beats and rhymes you could get some respect.....

peace,

I am accused of being stuck in that time, Maybe I am. It was the best of times. There was a certain energy in the air then. It's still here now, but then it was almost electrifying. Maybe because I'm older or because now the music is in everything from soda ads to deorderant commercials. Between 89-95 we would smack our grandmas to get a listen to the next hot thing. Shit, there were only a handful of videos. **Remember that Bonita Applebum video?** Now MTV spoon feeds us our music 24/7. I ain't mad. It is what had to come.

Yeah that era was simply sick! There is still good stuff being dropped all the time these days, but there is just something about the "golden age" that has kids looking back. I know for me part of it was just the fact that I was in highschool growing with that music. What ever happened to Blacksheep......pick.it.up.pick.it.up.pick.it.up!

man forget all the philosophising it's BITCHES.... they have destroyed rap...before niggas were making songs for they niggas and for themselves now niggas make songs for pussy...and what gets pussy...club songs.....so now you got to have atleast 3 club songs on your album or four that can get major airplay which really means the club right now...

Niggaz don't care for the club any way we want to get pussy anyway we can....If it means calling a bitch to come over or bringing her back from the club... niggaz don't dance atleast the straight ones I know... I mean we drink and puff but we can do that at home just can't get a bitch to come so you gotta go out to find her...and they be at the club where niggaz throw their raps to...

I mean if it's not BITCHES then why would a nigga like LL Cool J workout for an entire two years just to put an album out and then walk around with his shirt off... This nigga has the ardasity to show up to a major event like HOWARD HOMECOMING and take his shirt off and walk off the stage and that was it no songs or nothing...

Canibus said it best "99 percent of your fans wear high heels"

and thats where the fans are...bitches don't care about hard beats and street raps and creativity...they just wanna shake they azz...no matter what is being said...

and there you have it folkes real soimple the destruction of Hip Hop... also throw in the backing of Corporate America it has made black women oh so powerful...

There's much truth to what you say, joblack00...I've been thinking the same thing for the last couple of years.
That's why most of those songs are about what they want the ladies to do.

Some things can be imitated but never duplicated.....the only way you gonna capture a lot of what was being done then is you have to really be in that state of mind......or been there to understand....the gear that they used and everything I don't care what's said now about the old drum machines and software being better it was the innovation they had just using the classic gear that made it what it was everything at a producers disposal now is based on what the producers used then...nowadays sitting behind a computer and slicing and dicing is definitely the easy man's way to hip hop LOL ....Jungle Brothers, Tribe, Pete Rock and CL smooth...oh yeah give me those days back....but you know everything changes so just try, I challenge the real lovers of hip hop to invest in a complete throwback studio for nostalgia sake and learn and appreciate what it took to make a lot of that music, it is so easy to see the wave forms, blow em up, slice perfectly, loop perfectly and the biggest thing is how they were able to stuff effects into plugins....I dunno but I guess what made a lot of the hip hop sound good to was the vintage mastering that was used, I mean they mastered a lot of the music on the same level as say a barry white or isaac hayes album would be worked on....to make sure all of the sounds are perfectly leveled and PUNCHY......I dunno about you guys but back in those days the HOUSE music and Dance Hall Reggae was the shidd too....I also think that what messed hip hop up was the clumping of every Genre, including any rap or beats into hip hop....with the Bling and the money aspects of Hip Hop music that changed the perspective people had because commercialization really made a big negative impact on hip hop and the old Saying keeping it real got harder and harder to do because of the money making potential of Hip Hop, both the lifestyle and the music for large enterprises.

well said big d... to me the shit got wack when all that flossin on 20's shit started to come out... i agree that the vintage mastering sounded waaaay better too.. and people just had cooler shit tto talk about too... i mean cmon only built for cuban linx?.... no record nowadays has HALF the subject material and creativity that was put into that record... back then those albums took you on a journey..you could avtually sit in ur room with nothing to do and listen to the ENTIRE album and be entertained...nowadays it seems like songs are made either to bump in your car or get spins at the club...which is cool, but it really took away from the creativity of the art on both a lyrical and productionwise level.

Damn right peepz, many good memories fom the 90, stuff you will never come across again. These days the oldies are fucked up in their comebacks while the underground sets the new quality hiphop. Also hiphop is a globaly fashioned item since the majors seeing its exploitations capabilities. I mean, during the 90s the only hiphop to be seen in Europe was Yo! MTV RAPS, 2day I gotta watch my ears from any 2pac imposterous distaster and crappy music which seems to be affiliated with hiphop. If I could I'd go back in time, to the days of good 'ol digable planets, the nonce etc.

the nonce, yes. I don't hear that name very often.
it seems like nobody knows them.
I love them.
but back in the day's, when you are talking bout pussy, there was 2 live crew, nwa, and a whoooole lot of other cats talking 'bout pussy.
so I don't think that is the reason.
back in the day's every one wanted to get more airplay and more exposure and I think they made it.
Hip hop is everywhere.
my favorite hip hop jams are also from the late 80's/early 90's but music evolves and I think those guy's and girls succeded in what they were after, get BIG!!!!
they put hip hop on the music map and it has become a genre wich influences all other musical genres.
a bit the same what jazz did back in the days.
I don't look at it as a bad thing.

Well I could stand prophecy to that, I work at Circuit City evening shift, in the entertainment division, to promote the new klipsch speakers we had a library of songs, loaded up on xm radio, the dj was playing all the latest ish, no one in the store wasn't even rocking even though the speakers were tight, but when the dj flipped to slick rick's walk on by, heads were rocking, no offense but even the white folks at the store were drumming on the shelves to the beat and they knew the words line for line,
It was an amazing to see the power hip hop had when it was real, the energy was just amazing even though the songs were a decade old, they still felt just like yesterday.
But to add my 2 cents, I believe (real) Hip Hop has died because of us - the new generation - we support music thats not music. We pay artiste money by rocking to songs bout violence, low morale to women, and songs that are not even songs ex."wat da hook gon be". So in turn by doing so, we make it easy for artistes to get that money or to get that big hit cuz its so easy. So, I believe it is not the artiste that is to blame, they only give us what we wanna hear, and if it is crap we want, they give us crap, So at some point only when we choose to stop listening and seeking out those rare gems and promoting them, Then and only then we will get our "gems" back.
