well, while i ain't a tracker in the full sense of the word, i am extremely familiar with the tracking world.
renoise is one of the three elite trackers, but i wouldn't recommend using renoise or any other tracker for hip hop production.
and why is it that, you may ask. well, there are 4 important issues:

1. trackers lack serious looping\sampling abilities.

2. even the best modular trackers out there suffer from sound issues, i.e: the sound is not as good as in professional programs such as: reason, fruity loops, cubase etc'.

3. trackers are buggy, and unsafe for long-term work.

4. the method of working in trackers (i.e: typing letters which represent notes) is old-fashioned, and as an aspiring producer you better get used to working with a piano roll.

that's about it. if you need any other info, feel free to ask.

wow man, ive been usin renoise for about a year now, and before that was using madtracker for about 2-3 yrs.
i havent had much issues with either, i jumped from acid to trackers and the transition was great.

i like the ability to sequence my drums and be forced into usin loops so much, but i know what u are sayin.

renoise does have a function called beat sync where u can match the sample with the pattern, renoise is definitley one of tightest trackers ive messed with.

u know of any others that are up there with renoise ?
let me know
thx

hey man, glad i can help out.

1. renoise is most def. one of the best trackers out there at the moment, as it's based on an old tracker (NTK) which had been coded by a spanish chap called Arguru. the guy is a legened within the tracking scene, known for his state-of-the-art applications.

2. there are 3 trackers which are out there with renoise. here it goes:

A: Aodix (Arugru's lastest project) - http://www.smartelectronix.com/~arguru/
get Aodix Tracker v2.34, it's way better than v.3

B: Psycle - http://psycle.pastnotecut.org/portal.php
the tracker which has the best sound engine to date.
lacks looping\sampling functions - but you can you VSTi for those purposes.

C: Jeskola Buzz - the first modular tracker.
has the largest database of users and extra generators\effects.
http://www.buzzmachines.com/ -> here you can get the full buzz pack + download all the extras (ALOT!).

that's about it. i'd still recommend you to move forward; try reason\fruity loops\orion.
if you need anything else, don't hesitate to ask.
best wishes

P.S.: almost forgot, thank god for "edit".
you can choose not to use loops in reason, and just use the GREAT drum machine. you are able take individual hits and create whichever drum sequences you want.
