Wassup people,

Im just writing to see if you guys can help me out a lil. i have a pretty good computer p4, xp, 512mb, 80gigs, 2.0ghz but when i try adding effects to my mixes after about 3, it just starts acting up, it kinda crashes, you can still view the marker playing but no sound is coming out. how do you guys get the most out of your cpu, i did all those little tweaks and stuff but nothing. i use my computer to go online and things so its not a 100% recording computer for me. for you cubase heads out there, about how many effects can you crank out at a time?? am i doing it wrong?? i usually just open up the mixer view and add the effects from there, is there another way to do it?? any help/tips will be greatly appreciated.

The problem is probably not with your computer... the problem is you need a soundcard with a true dsp built on board to use cubase... I mean something with ASIO drivers for it... like an echo card. What's happening is cubase is using software and your cpu directly through layers, whiuch screws performance. You might try using only directx plugs for it to minimize the problem until you save 300-400 for a good soundcard.

If this doesn't help, try taking a look at your sound buffer in the options, make sure that there's ample memory set aside for your music, or you'll always get wierd artifacts and glitches plus crashes.

Also, if you are using a hacked version, get the real thing, you'll have better support for it and it's worth it anyways, steinberg are some pimps.

Hope I helped.

depending on the crack, it makes a difference.
Back in the days, I made all my music with cubase 4.06 or something. Cracked of course. It was crashing a lot. When I bought version 5, it didn't crashed anymore. So from now on I always to buy my softwares.

was it crashing while recording or when you were adding effects and messing around with the mix?

exactly, I would post more about the crackage, but won't do that, if you plan on having a real chance at this industry, I would say mos def put up the skrill for the real deal. this way when it fucks up at all, steinberg has to help you fix it to a certain extent, and their forums are full of awesome tech help too that you can't access unless you own a product of theirs.

I haven't used cubase SX (the new version) but I think it uses a dongle like nuendo, and if the crack you are using "emulates" the dongle, then your processing is being eaten by the emulation of the dongle.

You could try a different one if you just don't have the money, but I would support the software companies that make our tight ass beats available.

I also know that in a "good" version of nuendo, I can damn near max out all channels with stuff going on and only eat 20% of my cpu, so cubase should use less than that, since it's not nearly as intricate as nuendo, but I might be wrong here...

thanks for the help. i been going back and forth if to buy the real version or not, i got the cash but i dont want to buy it to have the same thing happenig over again and be like damn i coulda bought some hardware instead. are your computers being used only for music or are they being used for a little of everything?? thanks again.
a follow up question, i know im being greedy but if i have a cracked copy of sx 1.01 do you think it would be able to upgrade to 2.0 if i buy the update?? is only like 150 plus shipping but im not sure if the update would work.

I wish I could use my computer only for music...
You could check to buy cubase SL, if you don't wanna pay much. Ia heard it does well. You won't have advenced scoring interface but who cares really?
I don't think upgrading would work because you need a valid serial number for that...

edit:
you could go with that also much cheaper...

"And with Cubase SE you're using a system that you can upgrade whenever you choose to the higher Cubase SX/SL versions that are used by professional audio and music professionals worldwide."

thanks again guys. i was actually playin around with it yesterday and i noticed that my cpu usage goes up to like 80 and drops the audio if i press stop while its playin with effects or when its reaching the end of the audio tracks but i got to put a couple of effects while it was running and it was pretty smooth.

yeah my shit fucs up but its prolly cuuz i only got 256 ram ... something i do to save cpu is to process my audio instead of dropping a plug in the channel rack... or i might put a plugin on the rack and mess with it till i like it and then just process the audio with the same settings.. the only effects i really keep in the channels are the ones in my master channel.. this saves alot of cpu.. i know exaclty what u mean though happens to me all the time .. sometimes my comp gets to the point were in its so backed up and slow that I cant do shit

good looks holmz..when you say process audio do you mean bringing the audio track out of cubase to an external board and back into cubase??

no select a piece of audio ..then go under the AUDIO menu ..then go to PLUGINS .. a list of all ur vsts and plugins and what not should be there .. then select a vst .. from there you procces the audio directly instead of applying it to the channel ...... so it changes the actual audio file and shape of the waveform... hollaa bac if ya still dont get it
