Decent beginner hardware?

I'm just getting into producing hip-hop and am thinking about purchasing a sampler or sequencer. I already own a decent synth, and would rather use hardware than computer gear. Problem is that for one, obviously I don't want to spend too terribly much; and two, I don't really know anything about electronic production equipment, which is frustrating because I have ideas in my head and don't know the gear needed to make them happen. Anyway, any general suggestions to start with?

it all depends on what type of producer you wanna be. What type of producer do you want to be? Who are your inspirations etc.?

Well mostly, I'm into the more underground hip-hop, though some of the producers I like are really mainstream. I really like El-p's production as well as the RZA's for similar reasons. Because of them, I'd like to do at least some sparse sampling. But mainly, and it surprised me when I realized it, I'd like to sound like Timbaland- really synth-heavy with intricate drum patterns. I'd really be interested in trying to appropriate his type of sound into more experimental relms. It sounds pretentious and maybe overly-ambitious, but basically I'd like to make something synth-heavy but not so hook-heavy, and maybe add some noisier synths and odd time-signatures.

aight cool. I'll be interested to here some of your productions once you've got your style down.

Well, seeing as your into synth stuff with a bit of sampling, I'd suggest you look into a keyboard workatation like the Motif, Triton or Fantom.

Keep researching though, and see what the people here say too especially my main man Vitaminman (this dude knows his shiznit!)

Let us know how it goes.
