The sounds you are using are crutial, using compressions or reverb or whatever works.
if you notice a lot of grimey beats are based around pretty simple chord progressions.
But foremost make a mixtape or fill your mp3 with your favorite grimey shit and listen carefully and disect how it was produced. gl

use minor chords on the piano. particularly in the lower keys.

strigns are always good for any type of beat. just make sure u stay in key. and dont make them too loud.. remember someone has to spit to it.
also, HARD snares are good and dirty drumsamples

I think you should study the music first so you'll come to your equipment or software with an idea of what you want. I think the instruments are inconsequenceal unless you have an idea of what you want.. once you get to that point then you'll know what instrument will give you what you want. I am also not an expert and every artist has to find what works best for themselves. the desire to make music is not enough you have to dedicate youself and then things will make much more sence. I'm a writer/mc and look at beatmaking from that perspective so don't take my advice like an instruction manual.. i don't make hot beats yet :)

can not believe you just asked that..

hehe dako, searching unknown samples from never heard before loops from records or any music is part of the artform and makes ones music special. I think the info provided here so far for you is more than enough to get you off the ground. you could sample a seasame street record and tweak it to sound as gutter as anything if done right.. you couldn't downlad that sound because until you make it, it wont exsist. now get to work!! haha

thread i made about dark piano samples:

There is some good stuff there.

Also, I dont believe it is wise to look for and use random loops from the internet. They often have unknown origins and are copyrighted or leased under royalties, and you taking them from some site and using them would be against the law, and u wuold never know, until you get burned. So sampling is prolly ur best bet, next to composing.
