man i hate things like it ! it just takes all sense of skill and creativity away from DJing its like people can't figure it out for themselves if you cant work it yourself and mix the records get off the decks dont get out ur BPM list and ur calculater ! this and the CD decks post has really got be fired up 2nite lol !

Knowing the BPM of a song does not "take all sense of skill and creativity away from DJing", it simply saves alot of time. Yeah using a bpm calculator while playing out instead of using your ears is un-creative but not knowing your bpm's.
It comes in very handy when mixing music of different genres where the bpm difference is large (hiphop + drum n bass):dance:

Well, actualy, D&B and Hiphop do not differ as much as you think and is very easy to mix, besides, any experienced dj wouldn't need a bpm counter for no reason whatsoever besides lack of skills. I do see a point as to use audio->bpm converters in order to sync midi gear for use in a live set for example. But to me, most cdj's are wack and dont really fit the catagorie DJ in general, especialy when using the beat counters ( Pioneer pussies! ). It's just easy for lamers that want to be instant dj wonders without learning the basics.

Yeah most people know that D&B is about 2 twice the speed of hip-hop thats why they can mix well together.
My point is NOT about bpm counters but about KNOWING the bpm of your tracks. To mix tracks together like a dj would you don't need to know the bpm of the tracks your mixing, you've just got to know whether they can mix between +/-8%

Well, I leave everything to the ear and brain behind the rims, but I know some friends that tag their records in a set with the range % on it.
I tell em they're pussy too, lol! But then again, I dont spinn set, I just freewheel the whole deal.

ive been DJin for 6 years now and ive never ever used a BPM counter or found out BPMs of songs IMO it should be done with your ears ! i totally agree with formant its just for beginners who want it to b easy ! it took me years of practice to get to a decent level and i just disagree with nowdasy kids being able to get a sheet of BPMs and sum CD decks and think they are fuckin DJ craze ! and wots the point i nsaving time by knowing BPMs the whole knack of mixing is matching the BPMs if you already know that theres half of the stuff your meant to be doing already gone ! neway once your good enough and you've practiced for long enough you can match two sons perfectly in under 10 seconds and i take much more satisfaction out of being able to do that than letting a computer do it for me !

NO, the "whole knack of mixing" is simply not just matching BPM's but is the ability to get creative with your mixes. Swap around around basslines, increase the hi on eq or WHATEVER. By knowing the BPM of tracks you have more time between tracks to get creative and to make a good set.
I agree that Dj'ing with cd's and coming with a pre-planned set written down on paper is NOT real Dj'ing in my view.

I think that you should definitely be able to tell BPM's by ear....I think this is useful though if you need a scratch pad for MC's I mean I work with a rack of artists that never know what BPM's they really like to feel comfortable with.....it helps when you got a new artist and are feeling out their style......or they just might have a track that's already out and want you to make a new track based on it......I like this kind of thing

im not denying the BPMs serve a purpose i just don't think its needed in a DJ mixing sense that should be done by ear !
Delay - on certain decks there are functions that allow you to simply enter the BPM of the tracks and the electronics match it for you and i know poeple who use this method and still claim to b DJs that isnt DJing you can teach anyone to do that ! and i agree the ability to mix is being creative as you said with EQ's and just general tricks you use to make sets more exciting BUT the first thing you should learn IMO is how to match twon songs woteva their tempo, if you do this enough and you practice hard enough you can get it down to just a few seconds and with a lot of tracks you get now roughly in your head how much pitch bend you going to need ! If you like using BPM sheets thats fine i just personally think its just a basic DJ skill and no assitance should be needed in doing it and then you should still be able to get creative with you mixes once you've got down mixing records properly ! I've ben doing it for 6 years and have always taught myself everything and have never used a BPM sheet or the like maybe its because i didn;t use it and now im just stubborn i don't know but i think DJs should just practice more rather than needing help to do things !

Hey MarkN I totally agree with what you say. It took me a long time to learn beatmatching, and that was without knowing the BPM of my tracks. Nowadays I usually write the bpm of a track on a sticker and stick it to the vinyl.
Yes it does give a slight headstart when your beatmatching, but I know even if i didn't have the sticker i'd still know what to do anyway. Problem with alot of BPM calculators that you can get off the net is that they fluctuate, so it's never really 100% accurate.
There ain't no argument here. I think it's kinda cool when one post can provoke a whole load of threads and everyone giving in their two cents.

Take pocket japanese and a clock, press 1+ and press = for a minute on every 1/4 note. There, beats per minute. same for half a minute, just x 2. lol!
In any case, it takes skills to be a dj, even when engaging a performance that includes your own productions to be mixed. In a simple solution for this, the mpc has a Tap function hehe. But when it's too digital to perform, simply just multitrack mix the shit if you lack the skills. It only takes a timestretch, pitch and Cooledit to mix.
Or, Finalscratch if you want to spend the money.

yea i agree with you on that if you are a competant DJ and just write your BPMs down as a visual guide i don't have a problem as long as u'd still be able to do it without them ! its wen ppl use things like that an rely on them as there only way of mixing and call themselves DJs that i have issues with !

I'll have a serious excessive laugh @ the dj when it happens on the D&B tip ( and im mostly backstage hehe ), I have never seen it in a hiphop exhibition, that would be absurd.
