I don't understand the concept of live beat battles

I'm talking about the ones in front of a live audience, in person.

I think the whole point of having a live show is so that the contestants can perform for the judges and the audience. Every so often if I come across a clip of a live beat battle, it's just two guys standing there flailing their arms and bobbing their heads while they play their beat from a laptop, or if there happens to be a DJ doing it.

If you've ever seen these shows, the audience is quite tame, and I think that's why.

Anyway, I don't see the point of it.

Oh what?

Shit, I mean I feel like its a concept that still needs work, but, from the battles Ive seen - which isnt many, the contestants are producing a loop on the fly, but actively playing it throughout their time. You got a link to some of the joints you talkin about?

What else can a producer/beatmaker do when his beat is being played by the DJ or himself? I've been in many live beat battles. Its like a hiphop rap battle without words. Man, its even better if you have to make a beat on the spot. It's a whole different experiences being at a live event than watching it on youtube or whatever. The energy is up up especially when the beat is really creative and slaps. I like judges better than the crowd judging. With a crowd you can easily cheat just bring a lot of your family and friends to cheer for you. If audience is tame they must be part of the voting process

Yeah the ones where you have to make something on the spot are obviously good, a performance. I've seen some where they're just playing the beat and it makes no sense to do that. Like I said, a performance would be best.

Yeah I went to one a few years ago here and it was as I described so I left lol. I wasn't able to make it to another one that has sample flips live, that would have been interesting.

the only about making a beat live is sometimes time management. The venues have to keep the crowd entertain while the producers are making their beats on the spot. If some people aren't a serious hiphop head and like to wait some people will leave or come in and out the building

That's what I feel is happening when I see a battle, but that's just the way it is I guess. I mean, not everyone can do a live performance like Araab Muzik lol. But that would be cool too.

I mean if the beatmaker has an MPC One/Live 2/X, SP-404 or any other samplers, they could just play their beat but add finger drumming or play effects live like reverb or echo to make the beats more interesting. That's why I got some of the gears I have. I don't like standing around doing nothing while my beat is playing live. I don't have Ableton but I bet there is a way you can add effects on the fly.
