It's disgraceful but not surprising.

Funny thing is, wifey and I have been pretty down on China lately cause of this sort of bullshit. We'll be going back to Australia permanently in a few months.

The thing is that sort of shit is expected here and not even worth noting. The only way anyone can get a government job here is to have connections and be 100% supportive of any bullshit the government does. This week both my wife and I have been involved in "altercations" with petty arseholes abusing what power they have.

Anyway, my point is: the only reason cunts get away with it here is the Chinese reluctance to get involved in any confrontation, (it's not civilised apparently). If you let them get away with it, it just gets worse. People just accept crap like that here and it continues.

(although, not all Chinese put up with the bullshit:since the Tiananmen Square massacre there have been somewhere in the vicinity of 60,000 violent anti-government protest and riots in China: of course none of this is reprted in the local media but there is some level of unrest out there).

Smog's not bad in Qingdao. Pollution is relatively low here. We got sea breezes and most industry is downwind of the main residential areas. Of course, it's getting worse as more and more people buy cars.

Beijing sucks pretty bad apparently.

We did have that crazy green algae all along the coat, that got a fair bit of international coverage due to the Olympic sailing being held here, though.

Yeah its funny because the Chinese are all hyper sensitive in how they will be percieved, I hadnt formed an opinion yet(beyond the people are just people and prolly pretty cool) but the pollution looks 20x worse than LA!
You think they may have wanted to try and do something about the air quality waaaaay in advance of this.

They did try but.... too many people with cars and too much corruption i.e. they wanted to close down all factories for the duration of the games but too many party officials or friends of party officials have interests so... well you know.

People are just people and a lot of em are pretty cool but it's a fucked up system and too many arseholes getting away with too much. People accept it cause they don't know any better.

Yeah the whole face thing is an issue when foreigners criticise anything to do with China. They get like little kids; all sooky and belligerent. I know that from experience!

They seem to me like they COULD get it together , but in an effort to compete with the west it appears to me like they are wantonly destroying the environment. I mean I know that we do, but DAMN, here someone will bitch about it to the point that it will get fixed.

That's exactly the difference, no accountability and no-one willing to stand up, (well they do stand up and then they disappear). Goes back to my original point. The shit that's happening in the States with Bush happens cause people let it happen.

Oh yeah, when I said they have an emperor I was referring to the current regime which operates in pretty much the same way as the emperors did. They need some freedom and human rights is what they need.
