Multitrack Recorders. How do these work?

I do a lot of beats that are all outside of the computer and just record them in. But my computers not workin and im just sickof computers and i want to have all hardware, so im thinkin about gettin one.

Im not sure how they work but ill tell how i think they do, and somebody correct me.

You record whatever it is, like, your beat. You record it and set it to the first fader (/channel), and its there. Then you record again like, the vocals. Then you set that to the second fader (/channel). Then when you press playback you can hear the beat and the vocals at the same time and you mix them.

something like that. Thats how i did it on the computer. somebody correct me.



( i was lookin at the Tascam PortaStudio788, Boss BR-532, etc.)

yeah exactly. but you should really record each instrument individually for full control over your mix. such as bass kick on one, snare on two, hi-hat on three, and so forth. i prefer hardware to software myself. i have a korg d1600. its pricier than the ones you're looking at. but its a decent machine

we got the boss br-1180, it really doesnt take long to do, but its hard to edit stuff on there sometime, what i usually do is record then touch it up on cool edit then put it back in the recorder and mix. the boss machines have a really easy icon based interface which you can learn fairly quickly and it has decent effects...but its all a personal preference of what you like.

I just think i want to know how to do everything manually before i go back to computers. Im not sure whether im going with the tascam or the boss yet. But does anybody know anything about the tascam portastudio 788?? Any past experience?
