Huge Disapointment

I really don't see this as being much of an upgrade.

Combinator- is basically the ability to group a rack setup under a single heading so it can be minimized. Wow.

Mclass- The mastering suit isn't much better. It lacks the features that better software mastering programs like Ozone provide, especially an exciter for harmonics, and a good visual display of how the sound is being effected. If they aren't going to allow VST plugins like Ozone, then they need to meet the standards that those VST plug-ins have set. Also, your not really supposed to master without your vocals, and Reason is just barely making it in that regard which brings me to:

The sequencer: This thing is terrible. Fucking Terrible. Why don't they upgrade that. Anyone who says its fine has been using it for long enough to get used to, but that doesn't make it good, just familiar. These guys have come up with some pretty innovative ways to duplicate a studio in software, don't tell me they can't come up with something new here. Have you ever been on the road and tried using Reason without a midi setup? Waste of time. And it HAS to be able to drop in vocals like in Pro Tools. Their is no reason that it can't do that. I don't want to re-wire to another program, I want them to re-design their shit.

I agree with you on the "not much of an upgrade" thing, but I think you're off point on the sequencer. I'm not defending the sequencer, but I don't compare sequencers. reason has actually pulled me out of a few binds on the road. I use the sequencer every day with nothing but my laptop. No midi controller, nothing. I have a 3rd party program that let's me trigger all of the instruments in reason. And I've only been using the sequencer for about 4 months now, so it's not a "used to it" thing at all. The problem with a lot of cats is that they can only work on what they are used to. I was rockin' in reason in about a couple of days. The only thing i can say I don't like about Reason's sequencer is that is there is no pre-roll. Other than that, the sequencer is fine. I my opinion, any sequencer that has a metronome is fine with me. The sequencer doesn't make the music, we do. So by saying the sequencer is terrible, is kinda pushing it. Don't knock the sequncer, knock the user. Sequencers I use now are Reason, DP 4.12, MV8000, and Cubase, and if you hear 10 of my joints, you'd never know.

Also, I tried FL for like 20 minutes and made some cool shit, I just prefer Macs over PCs.

Shwaz - I dont think u can really consider the mastering effects to be ACTUAL mastering effects, i think that theyre really intended to simply clean the track up, boost the decibles a bit, and add a little shine at the end of your session before u export and add vocals in another prgm.......On a side note, to be quite honest - i dont think u can consider Ozone a way to professionally master your songs either....I have that plug and its just another typical plug in my opinion....In comparison, its the same shit so u might as well learn to use the ones that theyre going to attach to the prgm in the new one.

Yeah its true that probably the mastering suite aint no pro tools or something but then even if u got pro tools and dont know jack about mastering and mixing, the effect will be the same. And then that's when rewire is so helpful. I can rewire reason and sonar, play my tracks in reason and track them in sonar and then master the whole mix in sonar. The only thing I dont like about reason is that it doesnt accept plugins from other software. Sonar for example works with plugins from soundforge and i love that cuz all of those plugins have their own feeling.

Yeah i feel you....Once u dig into what u kno and like its hard to turn a cheek and say that this or that is better or whatever.....Do you man......I personally plan to rewire to Cubase SX once i get a faster processor and then i can do all the vocal tracking through there. As of now i jus make the track as tight as it can get inside reason which i feel is fine, and then export to work with in Cubase once a emcee is ready to come over and spit lyrics to it through the 1820. That process is pretty simple and seems to work great for me.

^^^^ thats using Reason as a vst.

Now my bitchmode;

You use 2 programs at the same time to get convenient and comfortable, 2 sequencers in all if you want to use other vst's ...sequenced by SX. No problems perhaps but if talking choice than it's a budget matter because every item in Reason can be replaced by a better...and I do mean a lot better vst or vsti meaning you dont need it at all...just SX and fairly good set of vst's. Not saying you can't make music on it but it does tend to be overkill for no real apparent reason other than being familiar and cheaper to purchase when looking for an alternative to each module in reason...not that everybody buy the shit...but in real life you're expenses on a software kit should double if not tripple depending on what you vst/i's you'd buy ( some cheap ones are really good...linplug, rgc, Gmedia ). But then again, a honest purchase of SX3 aint the cheapest either so Reason or VST's instead shouldn't be the walletassasin in the firstplace.

Alternative...

Subtraktor... I mean, gimme a break... the Junglist vst swatted it already, try Gmedia Oddity for a real killer.
Malström...Linplug Albino 2.0 , rgc Z3ta, CS80, symptohm melohman
NN-XT...Gigasampler, sampletank, Emu studio X engine
Dr.rex...EXS24II, styles rmx, phatmatik pro
Redrum...This is actually the only thing I like in Reason but; Linplug RMIV...much better

all the fx and dynamics...the rv7000...sounds nice...480L much better, dspfx studioverb too and there are 1000 other ones that are pretty appealing and this goes for all of em...

except for the comps...they really suck, even the Msuite wont propably top the lot...get a psp kit and dont even bother screwing with them, not even starting on the eq's.

All those merging option ? Has it ever made something sound especialy good ? I only think such options tend to sound messy instead of actually getting a better result...yeah you can combine 3 subtraktors with rex and merge it into mahlstrom's filters, along syncing the to the tap delays bpm. There are plugs like mentioned above who will do the same thing but sound good instead ? Why ? because the sounds were convincing already from starters...they're not achieved by complex routing, simply by layering voices and lots of em.

Still, I aint hating over this stuff but it becomes a bit outfated these days to use reason, I still think it's overrated these days when talking of a highly defined system...it is of course when considering the pricetag but that ...again... has nothing to do with quality. Considering the use of rewire actually makes the price go up...

When Reason first came out one of my people had it and it seemed very cool, wow you can turn it around and look at the wiring and reroute it. A huge innovation for electronic music production, It's been a while now since the first Reason came out, I would have expected a lot more than just a few more synths and some lame mastering suite that will allow thousands of wannabee producers to fuck up their sound even more. These are just some additional views I have that make me not that excited about Reason 3. But for those who have mastered it inside out I'm sure the added features will be taken advantage of, but I just think for a person who's never really used Reason when they compare what they get with Reason and other stuff that's out there, that's where I'm coming from. For you Reason gurus you'll still make your hotness regardless I'm sure because you've invested in it already.

Honestly, it doesnt matter if yer a VST guy or whatever....I started out with reason becuase of the price range and how it was a self contained production tool that didnt need much more than another sequencer to record vocals.....If i had the money even now, i most def would try some new things, but you kno how it goes...Moneys short and theres none really comin in so....But im still a reason fan even tho im really kinda restricted to it at this point.

I hated on the Reason upgrade before, but I got to defend the program. Yeah there are better softwear synths out there. The real analogs are even better. But are people really using Reason for the softsynts? I may be wrong so feel free to correct me, but Reason is all about the samplers. There might be other packages out there, but I don't see what about them makes them better the NX-T. I guess the ability to use VST plugins with it. Do people really use the softsynths to good effect? And what is better about other sampler programs like Giga Sampler.

hmm, if it is all about sampling than FL is the better platform to work with...is dedicated more over towards rmx'ing, much more convenient to handle and ... works with vst...is cheaper...has a better rendering engine...record audio aswell...wav editor...beatslicer ( which got better on 5.0 )...renders down individual tracks...I can go on and on and on

hey family,

I've got a couple of questions about Reason if y'all don't mind (these are mostly for a friend of mine who wants to get into production for fun).

1. does anyone know the date Reason 3 will be available? My friend is pretty much ready to buy the program but I'm not sure whether she should buy Reason 2.5 now or wait however long it is till Reason 3 comes out and buy it then. Any advice?

UPDATE: I found the answer, here it is for anyone interested;

Good news! You don't have to wait for the new version. As of today we are lowering the price of Reason with the same amount as the upgrade will cost, so basically, you're getting the upgrade for free!

Good news again: By doing this you'll have time to really get into Reason and then keep on working on your music and add on all the cool stuff you'll be able to do with the new features in Reason 3.0.

2. when she buys Reason, is she physically and legally able to install and use it on all 3 of her computers (Mac laptop, Mac G4 and PC)?

3. Mac users - what editing program do y'all recommend to use in conjunction with Reason (for chopping up samples and so forth).

4. for her Macs, what options does she have for soundcards to use with Reason, is it worth getting an Mbox or are the soundcards that come with Macs ok?

5. I saw on the Reason website that their are some books/guides for sale, has anyone used these? She's a total beginner so I'm thinking they may be worthwhile for her but would appreciate any recomendations if anyone has any.

hmm, I think that's all my questions... if anyone has anymore advice please feel free to offer it... :D

thanks!

NUG - I bought PowerTools for reason 2.5, but it was totally useless to me...I already knew everything that i provided.

As far as a soundcard, anything 16 bit or higher will do, but that all depends on what quality she wants?....If it were me, i would look to get a 24 bit card that has professional A/D converters.

I agree with Shwaz about Reason being more useful on the sampling side, being that i sample and compose. The malstroms dope, but it needs more sounds in the 2 banks to manipulate. The Subtractor is cool for bif sine basses and sweeps, or the occasional ambient wierdness.........I agree tho - I really like how the XT and the Rex make sampling a piece a cake. I have FL4 but i really cant dig it - obviously this a personal preference, but still, i dont think that FL is better for sampling.

Heres what i use on a strict basis:

1. Reason - primary production tool.
2. Recycle - Slicing out my Rex's for reason.
3. Audacity - For chopping all my samples.
4. Live - either for recording from my record player or recording vocal takes.
5. Cubase SX - Used the same as Live.

Hey Adam. It's been a long time. Hope all is well. Give my regards to Jonathan.

As you know, I use Reason. I rewire it to ProTools (M-Box), where I have quite a lot of effects by now and also ReCycle from time to time, but use the NN-XT more by now.
