I see that most of the producer discussion are about the more upfront prdoucers, but is anybody out there checking for this cat name Rick Rock, he did the Busta's "What u Want" but he mainly deals with cat like E-40. I heard a few of his thangs and they are of the chainey.

Also have any the yall producer think that it is nessecary to really the learn sound engineering or do you think you can make it to the next level without that knowledge and just let the engineer take care of that part opf the process

Rick rock also did some joints for jay z like change the game....if you produce naturally wantto engineer because you would like to mix a songdown yourself but sometimes we would be happy with just making the money from the beat but engineering gives you a more statisfying feel

Yes... I've been up on Rick Rock since 1996-97 when he produced for RBL a rap group from San Francisco. Then he came out with his own group called Cosmic Slop Shop.. he even rapped on the album. His style has drasticly changed over the years... at first he only did mob beats for artist like E-40, C-Bo, etc.. now he makes club hits. His career didn't take off untill Jay-Z rapped over his beats. I like his tracks. But its like this..... If Jay-Z raps on anybodys track, then that producer is certified in the game.

Yeah it seems that way, I never really heard of him unitl of late but I just was loving the stuff I 've heard. How is that comic slop, is it worth checking for. I use to love RBL doe

Cosmic slop shop is OK...its sounds like late 90's west coast Hip Hop.

I believe that a strong technical basis can only help a producer who wants great control over the systems he/she operates on.

However, there are many different ways to define a "producer." One example is the enigmatic individual with a lot of connections in the music biz that subcontracts actual production/engineering duties to others.

There are differents variants regarding a producer's technical prowess. However, as Sir Francis Bacon said: "Knowledge is power." Try to learn about the gear you have and the way it works, as well as other pertinent facts, as much as possible. It will help you in the long run.

Perhaps you will then use your technical skills to engineer and 'break in' working for an established producer. Thus, technical aptitude got you through the door, and then you can work with him/her to start producing tracks for bigger projects. I hope you see my point.
