Song feedback, vocal feedback

Had a hell of a time getting this to sound halfway descent, and I feel like I’ve listened to it too much. Horrible vocal recording and can’t get dude to re-record because he’s locked up since the day after we quickly recorded this. Any suggestions?

I can only do a shitty speaker test right now.

The texture of the vocal sounds good.
I think the level of the vocal sounds good.

But I do sometimes have difficulty picking out words; can't tell if this is down to individual or multiple factors, but my initial feelings are
- the vocal level sometimes feels like it dips; can't tell if this if because of compression or lack of it on the vocal itself, the compression on the master squishing the beat n vocals too hard,
- could be down to the vocal delivery; sounds a bit slurred / 'lazy' vibe

Sounds like you got a real heavy bass in there(?) it could be causing the compressor to 'choke' the mix.

The overall track sounds dope tho, brother.

I like this, very gritty vibe. Yeah the vocals could be clearer but obviously you can’t re-record currently.
Could hold the bass back a little or try a maximiser on the vocal?
The bass distortion definitely interferes with the vocals.
I’d say that’s the only problem as without the lyrics on screen I’d struggle to hear the majority.

Dope track though!

Thanks y’all this feed back helps and I’ll mess with it some one on these notes, but ok yea the volume on vocals going up and down I keep thinking It maybe was doing that because of the compressors I had on the vocals but didn’t think about master compressor being the issue, I’m pretty sure I just have ableton push limiter on the master, but I may have thrown one of the mastering chains on there as well.I’ll check that out. And maybe lower the gain or volume of tge 808 more. In general I had to take a lot away from the beat and simplify it cuz it was crazy over crowded at first. And unfortunately some of the vocal recording had picked up the noise from the headphones.he could deff have redone a few lines but didn’t have time since it spur of the moment done in like 30 min or something Wich I had to cut the beat down and change it. Dude is young and was hard to get him to focus cuz he always had ppl with him except for the 30 min we recorded this.

Yeah, I think it's something I noticed once. When I'd done my mix and the vocals sounded fine etc. Then I did my 'mastering' or whatever and I'd notice at 'pumpy' stages it would somehow 'choke' the vocal.

Maybe a solution, but don't quote me, could be to do the heavier compression on the beat separately before combining it with the vocal and doing gentle compression on the pair to glue them. Maybe.I don't know.
