The processes of a track/record???

Was talking to some guy today, and he mentioned the following...

pre-production
production
mixing
post-production
mastering

I only really thought it went production -> mixing -> mastering.


If anyone can clear up the different stages a track goes through, and what you can reasonably expect to do yourself, and what each involves. In brief, or detailed. Would be greatly appreciated.

pre-production (this is basically planning and for large productions it usually involves budgeting etc. for example think about a mill+ budget. It also involves hiring the talent etc)

production (creating everything)

mixing (you know what this is)

post-production (this doesnt really apply to music as much, this may just be getting levels close from song to song, but it applies more to video related projects)

mastering (you know what this is as well)

For a lot of people, as unorthodox said, production is part of the mixing process. A lot of times, even when I work with a two track beat, I chop the beat up and add a lot of production changes. They go hand in hand with hiphop. Pre-Pro... not so much with hiphop unless it involes live instrumentation, in which case it is arguably the most important part of the process. When I work with drummaboy, we have very little pre pro, however when I work with DJ Burn One... this is one of the most time consuming processes of the session.
