Time Streching

I'm confused on how to use it cuz I was practicing my sampling today, made all the chops and then went into getting the beat done, but I noticed that the chops didn't end at the end of the bar so I went back into Cool Edit and tried some time streching but I'm not sure how to use it. It's got a whole bunch of options like ratio, etc. Just asking if someone could clarify what time streching is and how it's used.

This might be a little different but pro tools has the time expansion/compression plug in, it should be the same general idea...The purpose that I use this for is this: If the sample is in tune but not on beat you can adjust the bpm or the ratio of the sample, this is good if you have an accapella, for example. that is 99bpm and you need to change it to 82bpm without it adjusting the pitch.

For your chops what you might want to try is get the whole sample to one bpm, just for mapping puposes. Then chop it up. If part of the sample needs a little extra stretch then you can use the cool edit feature.

hope this answers your question. good luck, man.

time streching is used when you have a sample that is in a different bpm to the rest of your track. You then stretch it to fit. Time stretching can also be used as an effect, especially when you are stretching it like 50-100% of its original time, as it makes the sample soundgritty and raw, sometimes i will time stretch a sample then stretch it back just to make it sound heavy and gritty, it is done thusly....

work out how long in seconds a bar is then time strech to fit, as for the options, soundforge for example has many eg...music 1 throu like 8, solo instruments and drums then you pick which preset is what you are streching eg if you are streching a sample that has more than one layer stretch with a music preset, drums? then use a drum preset then stretch away....

i would also say time stretch the whole sample first then chop it...

as for you mentioning radio, that souds like a filter preset rather than a time stretch one...
