Hi,

I went out yesterday and invested in a turntable. The guy in store told me that it can connect directly to the computer if it has RCA plugs on my soundcard. I didn't have that so he just sold me a special plug that connects into the computer 'speaker/mic' ports.

Now I have connected all this, but when I turn my speakers on and play the record nothing comes out. What am I doing wrong, and how can I actually sample of the record through the computer?

Thanks!

^ok I fixed it, and i can hear it, but it sounds very shit, it's too distorted and loud and etc etc.

Do I need to run it through the stereo amplifier first?

You need to have your turntable hooked up to a mixer first, then go from your mixer to your soundcard. You could also go through your amp first, as long as it's hooked up to the right part, Phono or something like that.

The reason is because the turntable audio signal is too "hot" to go straight into your soundcard, so you need something (mixer, amp) to "control" the signal before it reaches the soundcard. Plus you don't want to blow anything!

Make sure your computer's mixer is set properly too. Check the little speaker icon on your desktop's taskbar and look around.

Ok thanks.

Going through the amp? Does that mean just going through the stereo?

I also bought a brand new Evolution 449C yesterday and set myself back lamost half a G, so I can't really spend money on a mixer, unless i can get one under $50.

Ok ima clarify a few things.
A turntable ( phono) signal is lower than a line level signal ( keyboard etc....) . Like a mic it needs a preamp.
U can use a cheap dj mixer(has phono insand line outs) and conect the line outs from the dj mixer to your sound card.
Or use a standalone phono preamp ( rolls has 1 for like $50 usd) and plug dat directly into ur comps soundcard.
The best thing would be to use a dj mixer tho cause you can control the volume as well as the eqs( if mixer has it) of the turntable.

And no you cannot hook a turntable directly yo any line level input rca or other wise. That guy in the store aint know what he was talking bout.

the fella at the store fucked you take the turntable back. you will need a preamp or to run the turntable through a mixer with a phono input.
