i have found that when it comes down to the wire in a battle, the more aggressive beat usually gets it. But sometimes a sample can be so smooth and dope and can still win even if its not the more aggressive beat. The subjective nature of it all is what can make anything happen and with so many close to call rounds, it really could go anywhere.
yeah, i don't think it is why i've lost any rounds or previous battles.. But, I might want to start rethinking things... Most of my shit I make for myself.. cuz I also rhyme. And lately, I've been coming too soft. I actually prefer more aggressive shit anyways, so bringing that to the battle and also having something I prefer to rhyme on.. well.. that's just two birds.... 1 Stone. ;)

i dont think Im capable of making a beat without strings in it, could almost say the same for piano too hahaha. Piano is my go to instrument to establish what key im dealing with and the chord progression, and in finding that out, I usually have some piano chords laid out from the start, it sets my frame of reference so I know what keys I can use and which ones I cant. Then everything else is just an improvisation within that frame of reference.
I used to be similar. If I gotta make a beat with strings and piano I already got my ingrained kinda formula to that shit.

But I had to ditch it - It kept me stuck a certain way. I felt I need to let go of it so I could move on and grow to where I need to. I think since I started producing again I've avoided them completely. Force myself to allow a new personal way to develop.

If I ever need them I can go back to them - like riding a bike.

Respectfully, beat17 and 18 are my fucking ishhhh. I prematurely slapped a vote on one of them before listening the other. But now I regret it 'cause I got love for both tracks I'd rather pull my vote and leave it to fate. But I'll have to leave it that fate(or fade, spooky huh) lead me to hear one first.

Gotta speak to both you producers after! Wild thing is - I feel like I know Beat 18's beat from round 1, but no idea Beat 17's beat from round 1.

Fade unknowingly built a round completely catered to me right there.

the soft stuff has its place and shouldnt be underrated, but its place isnt really in battles. We shouldnt just make aggressive music in a bid to win these battles as we then get stuck in the aggressive rut and lack diversity ourselves. A lot of times with boom bap, the whole feel and direction is dictated by the sample before I even touch it. There are a lot of variables that decided what makes something dope, what some tracks lack in some they more than make up for in others, makes deciding between two beats sometimes hard, leaving you wondering if you made the right call. Just have to shrug, place the vote and not take it all too seriously.

i'm starting to realize I'm selecting stuff that is more hype... more aggressive, etc. And guessing that others are persuaded in the same way... and then realizing.. I'm NOT bringing the right type of beats to these things!

I vote differently... as a producer/music person, I'm well aware the factors of... "this sounds louder" and hype. As well as cacthiness.

"normal" peeps will usually vote for what's louder or more hype (or combo).I separate from that, and hopefully most here should too (or be aiming to be able to discern), I go off a lot of things, sometimes the hype track will be better, but not because of its hype.

If I hear a cliché hype beat, cliché patterns cliché sounds etc. then I'm more likely to vote for the more interesting track (of course factoring in my other things first.)

A lot of people here make some really good hype beats, using good sounds n good whatever. But theyre the same sound same patterns youhear everywhere. Still may get my vote, but the more 'original' the more likely that'll be.

Love.

I feel that for sure... sometimes something just sounds like it fell off the "trap 101" truck. Might be pretty good, but it is derivative and cookie cutter.

BEat 35 is quite cool, personally I'd have maybe had the changes last like 1 or 2 bars at the end of like a 4 or 8 bar group. When I heard the sample change, after it knocked once or twice I was feeling it to swing back to the original.
This one also stood out for me. Regarding the structure I try to imagine what it could be on a real say 3' song, so if there are 2 or 3 parts I'm fine... Because it's condensed in 1 minute for technical reasons that would not exist in another context

yeah I get it, but I feel it could been maybe like..

1-1-1-2,1-1-1-2,1-1-1-2, 1-1-2-3
or something like that. It felt a bit kinda too linear for me, like going forward the producer could maybe like rearrange those parts.

I feel even in the shorter duration limit of 1 minute. They could have increased the impact of those changes. dope samples tho
