Weird instrument drum thing...?¿?

Easy, family.

Was talking to some reggae musician at some event, and he told me he plays this instrument called a "kahan"(I think this spelling is dramatically wrong), and I was interested in finding one, or whatnot online, but google searching that word hasn't really proved well for me.

Anyone have any idea what instrument it is I'm actually searching for???

I think he said it's like a box, and has strings, but is played like(least he uses it) in the form of a drum...

any ideas???

The guy said he used to sit on his speaker box and drum against the woofer as a kid, and said that instrument seemed to come natural to him. I guess that's how it can be played?

Thats how it IS played. lol

at least the large ones. There is a small cajon that sits on your lap, but the regular ones you sit on it.

cajon's are fun, especialy with a looper. There are no rules how to play them, just hands on percussion.

Yup no rules, but there ARE very specific techniques you can learn to get VERY unique and specific sounds. Just hitting it gets you one of maybe 5 or more sounds it can do. Ive 1st hand witness some crazy stuff
