i think selling out is being fake in order to make money. lying, selling sex, selling a different image from your own, writing lyrics for the lowest common denominator, not writing your own lyrics at all etc are all fake.

music is supposed to some from within the artist and they should feel strongly and passionate about what they are doing.

but...music will always be a business

Of course if a label offers a starving artist tons of money it's hard to say no, but that still doesn't justify that artist changing their whole image. It's true though, if you're in it for the money then yes, you have to change with the times. But if you just want to make music and stay true to yourself, then "selling out" is a big no-no.

Just think about this, just about every rapper out there thats rapping is doing it for the money as a matter of fact the majority of the best rappers out there use rap as a way out of the hood, Pac did all that rappin for money "Im addicted to currency nigga thats why we doin this", B.I.G (Listen to Juicy off Ready to Die), rap music for most is like a more of a way out of getting out the ghetto and your current situation than just a way to express yourself. Of course if you put a million dollars in the hand of a nigga that aint neva had shit they gonna do whatever you tell them to do why? Because they gotta eat, they got children to feed, and they are tired of living broke, all of which is more important than some damn image the media gives to them. There arnt that many people like Nas who use their music to express their view most of the time hip-hop is the only way out, so you take your only exit and do what it takes to survive in the industry. Personally I express myself in my lyrics but the thought of being able to buy my moma a house, or starting a family with my girl, getting my grandparents out of retirement homes, and finally putting money in my family who BELIEVES in me using money that I may get out the industry never stays off the top of my mind and that hunger that I have to succeed financially in the industry is what fuels my dreams and powers me to push on, even when the odds are against me and people tell me I cant do it.
