    epiphany?

samuelock, skip them two pieces and get a groove tubes brick. the ART preamp is a real tube design (high voltage) but they use cheap capacitors and resistors etc. It would probably fix up nice, if you have some soldering skills and a good 4-5 hours to waste. The Brick goes for $399 but you can...

im in the market for a new vocal mic any suggestions?

I have studio Electronics Z3300a thats dope on rappers. real clear and crisp. I use it with an upgraded Bellari Tube Pre. I hear the SE2200a is good too. That's like $300, but if you can bump it up to $400 that's what I paid for the 3300 from american musical supply by doing their pricematch...

    Simple/Dre Style drums

I think about this a lot too and my simple drum patterns sound wack to me too but then I thought about it, its a combination of the samples and other elements and how they fit around the drums as far as timing wise. That makes a lot of difference. I'ma try some of these other tips too.

    Mastering Question.

Its not something that you can "just" pick up. But anyone with a good ear, a lot of patience, and some thin pockets can do it. I did. I master all my own shit. It did take me 3-4 years to get good though, truth be told... Here's my advice: 1. Finish mixing FIRST. Once you do, bounce down your...

    epiphany?

If you do decide to run your sounds thru a tube preamp, put them through a DI (like the radial JDI) and then put them into the mic input of the preamp. And get a real tube pre with normal plate voltage (like a Groove Tubes Brick) instead of a presonus blue tube or equivalent. The tube in the...

    MPD24 vs MPC500

Try FXPansion Guru. I use it with the MPD16. Its the closest you can get to an MPC without an MPC.

    Compensating w/o Near Field Monitors

aight first thing you gotta do is understand the frequency range. Like what does too much 300Hz sound like? What frequencies are missing when it sounds dull. Try taking a parametric eq and boosting one band by like 18dB and sweeping it across the frequency spectrum while one of your beats...

    GURU VST (Step sequencer plugin)

Guru is cold! I use it standalone. There's a demo that you can try. A lotta times I do the whole beat in Guru and don't even use it as a plugin until I 2-track it out for the MC. All I gotta say is try the 'Heavy swindling' groove template at around 25% and study the graphs they're powerful...

Help!! Getting that ''sampled sound'' without sampling...

Just work thru the process: They recorded through analog gear to 2 inch tape back in the day, so try some analog sounding plugins, plate reverb, etc. on your tracks. A lowpass filter with a 6dB slope set around 3000-5000 Hz can help too. Add a little resonance, but not more than 5-10%, to make...

Who puts hooks on their beats?

I keep hearin cats say you need to have hooks on your beats to shop em better, but damn dog I ain't no rapper. Who does it around here? I mean maybe that would work for some neptunes type beats or something but how do you do that with street shit? Scratch some acapellas on top of it or something?

anyone ever sell the same beat to 2 people?

I look at it this way, just be straight up with nigs. Tell them they ain't "buying" the beat. They leasing it. Then you can do what you want. Most local cats don't like that ish but its too many good reasons to do it. What if somebody comes along and wants to spend some real cash on the beat...

Anybody get the M-Audio Project Mix I/O yet?

My guy had a Project Mix I/O and he hated the mic preamps. But he was happy with the control surface for Logic 7.

    how important is room treatment?

I got this for less than $200 at Guitar Center: 5x 2x4ft. 2 inch foam sheets 36x 1x1ft foam tiles 4x 2ft bass traps I used two of the 2x4s (mounted with four foot 1x2in. pieces of wood) on my sides (such that if I put a mirror there, I'd be looking at the sides of my speakers) I put half of...

    The Bass VS The Kick

cosign that. I usually cut both the bass and the kick somewhere in that range. For example, if the kick is deeper, I'll cut it at 200-250 HZ (Q at 1.4-2) and then cut the bass at 300-400 (same Q). I normally cut somewhere between 1-3dB depending on the sounds themselves. Make sure you 1. can...

    External HardDrive + VSTs

the problem (which is the same for pretty much any program or application extension) that when you run it, it looks for its support files (samples, etc.). If they aren't where they were originally, then you may run into problems. Some VSTs (mostly free ones) are insulated from this problem...

How Do You Deal with School and BeatMaking?

Its all in how bad you want it. I got a job I gotta commute to. That's 11 hours out of every day, five days a week. I got a needy ass wife, a two year old, a six week old baby, and my 12 year old niece lives with me, she was abused and abandoned by her mom and raped by mom's boyfriend. And she...
